TV viewers urge everyone to watch show with ‘Breaking Bad levels of tension’

It’s not very often that you find a TV show that grips you by the soul, forcing you to devour it in days, but when it does, you can’t help but tell everyone about it.

For some avid TV watchers, they haven’t felt this way since the 2008 hit Breaking Bad landed on our screens, changing their expectations of a good plot, tension and character development forever.

If you fall into that category, we have great news for you: the Australian TV show Mr Inbetween is here to fill the gap.

Mixing crime with comedy, the series, which first aired in 2021 and now has three seasons, follows co-creator Scott Ryan’s character, Ray Shoesmith, as he juggles the complexities of being a father to a young daughter and a hitman.

But that’s not all.

In addition to dealing with those two time- and emotion-consuming responsibilities, Ray, the complicated man with a heart of gold, is also exploring a new romance and caring for his sickly older brother.

Each season is full of captivating stories and will have you cry laughing more times as you can count, especially when Ray declares he will kill a man, but he won’t kill a Huntsman Spider because ‘you gotta draw the line somewhere’.

Following the classic cliches of an underworld figure, the lovable rogue takes meetings in unsuspecting places, like strip clubs and has mundane fights with his ‘misso’, and it’s enough to have won over the hearts of Reddit users.

Taking to the social media forum, hailstruckler has declared they are ‘completely in love’ with the show because it is ‘sad, gut-wrenching, funny, relatable’ while being ‘short and bittersweet’.

They added: ‘Each episode is so perfect on their own, small glimpse into the life of Ray Shoesmith, incredibly well paced, to the point and very grounded and human’.

Many users agreed, with some even classifying it as a ‘sleeper hit’ because it’s been out for so long and received very little hype.

Kokoshini wrote: ‘Mr Inbetween is criminally underrated and definitely a gem’, while vaestgotaspitz said they love how it is ‘written and directed’.

‘Like real life but with the boring parts cut off. All characters talk and behave so realistic, not grotesque like in most movies and shows. Just like real life but only the interesting moments,’ they said.

GreyNGroovy added: ‘At times when the drama and action is going it reaches Breaking Bad levels of tension and suspense, and other times it’s cozy slice of life, it’s so damn good, cannot recommend it enough.’

The Breaking Bad comparison was one that many couldn’t help but agree with.

‘I’ve always sold it as a low stakes Breaking Bad when recommending it to others,’ BetterCallTom wrote.

Ubiqunam added: ‘The last two episodes of the first season gave me major Breaking Bad vibes.’

Breaking Bad, starring Bryan Cranston, Bob Odenkirk and Anna Gunn, first hit screens 16 years ago and was a slow burn with fans, not reaching critical acclaim until it’s second season.

The crime drama went on to win 16 Primetime Emmy awards, two Golden Globe awards, one British Academy Television Award and many other awards.

Mr Inbetween is available to watch on Disney Plus.
