A new name has emerged in trade chatter just days before the AFL exchange period starts, with an Eagles star attracting ample interest.

EAGLES STAR ATTRACTING INTEREST

The manager of West Coast star Tim Kelly insists his client is “completely committed” to the Eagles, despite recent interest from non-WA clubs.

Five years after his blockbuster trade from Geelong – which saw the Eagles part with two first-round picks and a second-round pick to acquire the midfielder – Kelly has reportedly attracted interest from rival clubs, despite being contracted to West Coast until the end of the 2025 season.

7 News Perth reporter Ryan Daniels on Tuesday night reported Kelly was “a watch for the next 12 months”, with no Eagles deal beyond next year on the table at this stage.

“Kelly’s preference is to stay – but would consider options. Enquires (sic) have been made by multiple interstate clubs,” Daniels wrote on X.

“Kelly’s management spoke with @freodockers, but conversation didn’t progress beyond a casual chat.”

SEN reporter Sam Edmund on Wednesday morning told AFL Trade Radio it’s “a reasonable chance to happen that Tim Kelly is playing for Freo next year”.

But Kelly’s manager, Anthony Van Der Wielen, on Wednesday released a statement declaring Kelly was “completely committed to the West Coast Eagles”.

“I spoke with him at length just yesterday and can confirm he is very excited about what lies ahead under the guidance of new coach Andrew McQualter,” Van Der Wielen said in a statement.

“He is currently contracted up until the end of this season (2025), and I see no reason why he wouldn’t remain with the club beyond that if they wish to retain him.

“We are open to discussing this with the list management team anytime they wish to do so.”

Kelly, 30, has played 144 AFL games with Geelong and West Coast since being drafted as a mature-age player in 2017.

He claimed an All-Australian blazer in 2018 with the Cats then won West Coast’s 2023 best and fairest award after playing all 22 games.

PEATLING DOWN TO ‘THREE OPTIONS’

Emerging GWS midfielder James Peatling is reportedly likely to choose from “three options” as he nears a decision on his playing future.

Peatling, 24, remains unsigned despite the Giants recently upping their offer to four years, per AFL Media journalist Cal Twomey.

“It’s a decision that (Peatling) has been toying with over recent weeks and months,” Twomey told AFL Trade Radio on Wednesday afternoon.

“He has a four-year deal now in front of him from the Giants … if the Giants wanted to keep him, they had to get to that four-year mark, and now they’re alongside other deals and (have) given themselves the best chance to keep him.

“That obviously happened after the Harry Perryman (to Collingwood) decision was formalised.”

Twomey believes Peatling will make one of three choices in the next day or two.

“Peatling, for me, I think it’s probably one of three decisions now,” Twomey said.

“I think it’s either stay at the Giants on that (four-year) deal, go to Adelaide — where he’s got strong connections with (soon-to-be Crow) Isaac Cumming — or go to the Western Bulldogs.

“I think they’re the main three remaining decision factors for him … That’s the way I’ve narrowed it down as I look at it.”

Twomey added a final call will be made imminently, re-emphasising the keen interest from the Crows and Dogs.

“If it’s not today, the decision, you’d expect it to be Thursday or at the latest Friday,” he said.

“There’s no doubt that the Crows are chasing this one pretty strongly, and the Dogs have been in there for just as long as well. A lot of clubs have come for him, but as I look at it now, they’re the three options.”

West Coast, St Kilda, Melbourne, Collingwood and Richmond have been among the reported host of rival suitors for Peatling, who played a career-high 19 senior games this year for the Giants including an impressive finals series.

Fellow AFL Media reporter Riley Beveridge added there is “a confidence internally” from GWS that Peatling would stick around for the long run.

Nine’s Tom Morris later told AFL Trade Radio that the Giants were ‘hopeful’ of securing Peatling’s signature by Wednesday night’s best-and-fairest function.

TOP COMPO HOPE FOR GIANTS

A potential silver lining looms for the Giants for losing gun free agent Harry Perryman, whose new contract could trigger the best possible compensation draft pick for the NSW club, according to AFL Media.

The Giants on Tuesday confirmed Perryman had informed the club of his decision to explore his options as an unrestricted free agent, with Collingwood his preferred destination.

Perryman is keen to join the Magpies, despite receiving a long-term offer from both Port Adelaide and the Giants, who were prepared to sign Perryman to a new six-year deal.

AFL Media reported the Magpies’ offer for Perryman – which also has a six-year tenure – could trigger Band 1 free agency compensation for the Giants.

While a $900,000-per-year salary would be needed to earn the Giants a first-round compensation pick, the fact Perryman is a young free agent – he only turns 26 in mid-December – could help the Giants, according to AFL, as it did with the Kangaroos 12 months ago when they acquired a top-10 pick for losing then-25-year-old Ben McKay to Essendon.

Should the Giants be granted Band 1 compensation, they’d receive a pick after their natural first-round selection, which would be Pick 15. Band 2 compensation, however, would net the Giants an end-of-first-round selection.

St Kilda has remained hopeful it will receive a first-round compensation pick for losing free agent Josh Battle to Hawthorn, however his new salary could reportedly fall short of triggering a Band 1 ruling. The Saints currently hold Pick 7 in this year’s draft.
