When the Carolina Panthers take on the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, it will mark a historic first for the National Football League.

The game is the first time two female presidents will go head-to-head in professional football. The two executives represent a small, but growing class of women in the front office at the NFL, and they are the only two female presidents out of the league’s 32 teams.

“I’m really proud of this moment,” Carolina Panthers President Kristi Coleman told CNBC ahead of the game. “It shows you can be anything, as long as you do a good job.”

Coleman, who has a finance background, was named team president of the Panthers in February 2022 after previously serving as vice president and chief financial officer of Tepper Sports & Entertainment. Hedge fund founder David Tepper owns the Panthers.

Sandra Douglass Morgan was named Raiders president by owner Mark Davis in July 2022 after more than two decades in the gaming, legal and corporate sector.

Douglass Morgan said the moment is not lost on her.

“We want to celebrate the fact that these are new groundbreaking moments, but at the same time, we’re doing our job, just like every other president in the league, and making sure that we’re handling the day-to-day business operations,” Douglass Morgan said.

The NFL has made a big push in recent years to increase gender diversity among its ranks.

Last year, women made up 42.5% of employees in the NFL League Office, an all-time high and “a significant improvement from a decade ago when only 29.3 percent of women held these positions,” according to The Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport at the University of Central Florida.

The league says it has 243 women in front office positions.

On the field, the numbers are also growing.

The NFL says 22 women currently hold full-time coaching positions in the NFL. The league says that is a record for any male professional sports league and an increase of 187% over the past five years.

As part of growing and developing that pipeline of women, the NFL holds an annual Women’s Forum. Since its inception in 2017, more than 400 women have gone through the program with upward of 250 opportunities emerging for women at all levels of football, according to the league.

Douglass Morgan said women’s interest in the NFL has been on the uptick for years and that hiring a more diverse employee base is critical to connecting with those new fans.

“As our fans become more diverse, I think our employee base should be as well,” she said.

As the league looks to flag football as another growth avenue for the sport, Coleman and Douglass Morgan say it is another pipeline for women to get involved in the game.

Today, the NFL’s flag football program has more than 700,000 participants and provides a pathway for women to play in college.

Both Douglass Morgan and Coleman say their teams’ owners have gone above and beyond to make them feel welcome in the league.

“Mark Davis has always said, ‘Sandra, I don’t care if you’re white, Black, whatever, I hired you because you’re the best person for this job. You’re the best person to lead the Raiders,'” Douglass Morgan told CNBC.

To women looking to break into male-dominated sports leagues, both executives say be confident in your ability to learn new things and don’t be afraid to bet on yourself.

“You need to do your job, the job you have, and you need to do it well so people can picture you in the next job. And then I’d say, you need to be kind and also believe in yourself,” said Coleman.

“Don’t let them see you sweat,” Douglass Morgan said. “When you’re only two of 32, you know, we may be under more scrutiny because we are in the minority here. Make sure you have a good group of people around you to support you through any of the guaranteed challenges that are going to be in your way.”

Martin Zubimendi reportedly regrets snubbing Liverpool this summer in favour of staying at Real Sociedad.

The midfielder has apparently asked for the Reds to try and sign him in January after rejecting a £52million bid to stay in San Sebastian.

The 25-year-old had given Liverpool his word but backtracked after a charm offensive from Real Sociedad boss Imanol Alguacil, who reminded him of his love for Basque food and hiking locally.

Failing to sign Zubimendi left Liverpool somewhat in the lurch as he was their top summer target and they wanted a long-term successor to Fabinho, who left for Saudi Arabia in 2023, but Ryan Gravenberch has impressed as a number six.

However, Spanish outlet Estadio Deportivo claims he has told Liverpool to try and sign him again. That said, it is worth applying a dose of scepticism. Estadio Deportivo cites the ‘English media’ as a source.

It has been a disappointing start to the season for Real Sociedad, who are 16th in LaLiga and just a point above the relegation zone having played a game more than their rivals.

They have finished in the top six for the past five seasons, with Zubimendi playing an important role for most of that time, but this season they have struggled to find the net.

Some think that a sticking point for Zubimendi could be that he has not been offered an improved contract, with his current one up in 2027.

Real Sociedad president Jokin Aperribay recently gave an interview denying that Zubimendi demanded an improved deal to stay put, amid suspicions that he had.

‘There has been no conversation with Zubimendi to renew the contract. There has not been now and there has not been before. He did not put any conditions on us,’ he told local paper Noticias de Gipuzkoa.

‘He understood the moment and knew that it was a market in which some players were already going to leave, and he understood that it was a time to stay at Real Sociedad.

‘He has not put a renewal as a condition nor have we talked about it. The conversation with Martín was short and quick.’

As Mail Sport reported in August, the main factor that prompted Zubimendi’s switcheroo was manager Imanol’s persuasion.

It is understood the boss held several meetings with the 25-year-old and tugged on his heartstrings to stay, referencing how the fanbase would be disappointed by his exit. Imanol also talked a lot about how good Zubimendi’s life is in San Sebastian.

He made a presentation that centred around the good food options in the Basque region and Zubimendi’s hobby of hiking up Mount Ulia. He also talked about how the player had told Spanish TV he would stay at La Real after the Euro 2024 final.

Championship Preston North End knocked out Fulham last night after the longest penalty shoot-out in League Cup history.

With the 31st spot-kick of the evening, Preston skipper Ryan Ledson held his nerve after Timothy Castagne blazed over from twelve yards, to send Paul Heckingbottom’s side through to the fourth round of the competition with a 16-15 victory on penalties.

‘As soon as he (Castagne) missed, I knew I was going to score and it was time to get home really,’ joked Ledson. ‘I want Liverpool away (next round). All the lads are buzzing after that,’ Ledson added.

‘I’ve never been to Anfield so I’d take that,’ said Heckingbottom. ‘The standard of the penalties was unreal. As it wore on, it made me even more determined to win it.’

Fulham boss Marco Silva changed his entire team for the trip to Lancashire, with a first start handed to Reiss Nelson while Heckingbottom made eight changes of his own.

The home side took the lead in the first half thanks to a brilliant finish by Ledson but Fulham got a deserved equaliser on the hour mark through Nelson.

Silva turned to his bench, making five attacking changes in a bid to get a winner but Preston held firm before triumphing in a crazy shootout, where 31 of the 34 penalties were converted successfully. ‘I felt we showed enough to win the game,’ said Silva, whose side reached the semi-final of the competition last season.

It’s the trend that has dominated football Twitter over the past few weeks and got fans from all over reminiscing on iconic moments from Premier League history.

Inspired by the Cultras Football Podcast, the rise of the #Barclaysmen has seen supporters celebrating several former top flight footballers, alongside moments of heritage from the Premier League.

In short, it is a nostalgic look at English football and one that has spread, with fans sharing short highlight clips from a player’s career, usually accompanied by a famous indie tune from the 2000s.

Those stars who have been celebrated are not necessarily the usual icons associated with the Premier League, but the ‘streets won’t forget’ footballers who became cult heroes over their years of service – and even clubs have started to get involved.

Following the rise of the #Barclaysmen, Mail Sport has ranked our top 10 #Barclaysmen compilations on social media.

John Carew

Carew was a Norwegian striker who became a cult figure as he represented Aston Villa, Stoke City and West Ham between 2007 and 2012.

The 45-year-old was a crucial member of Martin O’Neill’s Villa side as they battled for Champions League qualification and the compilation enabled fans to reminisce on his powerful finishing and entertaining celebrations.

Carew retired in 2013 and has since attempted to launch an acting career, although he was jailed for 14 months for tax evasion in 2022.

Stiliyan Petrov

Another former Aston Villa player to get on our list, Petrov was a classy Bulgarian midfielder who became a fan favourite at Villa Park after making more than 200 appearances for the club.

Petrov, who was generally a defensively minded midfielder, became club captain and had a penchant for scoring a screamer.

The 45-year-old was heartbreakingly forced to retire from football in 2013 after he was diagnosed with acute leukaemia, but he remains extremely popular at Villa, where he was inducted in their Hall of Fame.

Jay-Jay Okocha

One of the most talented players to ever play in the Premier League and voted as the greatest to have played for Bolton at their stadium, Jay-Jay Okocha became a cult hero in the early 2000s.

The Nigerian dazzled for Sam Allardyce’s side as they qualified for the UEFA Cup and his popularity saw shirts be printed with the inscription – ‘Jay-Jay – so good they named him twice’.

Okocha was a much-loved figure in the Premier League and even won the Player of the Month award in November 2003, with the attacking midfielder a typical #Barclaysmen.

Rory Delap

Delap found his career at a crossroads at the age of 30 when he joined Stoke in 2006, but it proved to be a transformative move as the midfielder-cum-right back developed into a Premier League icon.

It was at Stoke that Delap’s inate talent for a long throw-in was discovered, with the Irishman’s skills helping to transform Tony Pulis’ team and his own career.

So effective did Delap’s throw-ins become during the early years of Stoke’s time in the Premier League, that he assisted seven of their first 13 top flight goals and his success even led to teams kicking the ball out for a corner instead of conceding a throw-in.

Steven Pienaar

Pienaar became another recognisable Premier League figure over two spells at Everton, along with stints at Tottenham and Sunderland.

The South African was a crucial part of Everton teams under both David Moyes and Roberto Martinez and the silky winger remains popular among the Goodison Park faithful.

Pienaar was not known to score many, but when he did it was usually a cracker, with several of these strikes on full display in his compilation.

Sebastian Larsson

It’s said you can’t have a ‘wand of a right foot’, but if you can, Larsson definitely had one.

Over 14 years in the English game with Arsenal, Birmingham, Sunderland and Hull City, the Swede was known for scoring several long-range screamers, while also being a reliable presence in midfield.

The sight of Larsson stood over a free kick was normally a worrying one for opposition, with the Swede joint-fourth on the list of free kick goals in Premier League history with 11, adding to his cult status.

Youri Djorkaeff

Like his former Bolton team-mate Jay-Jay Okocha, Djorkaeff was not the sort of player you expected to see turning up at the Reebok Stadium.

But, as with Okocha, the Frenchman was brilliant despite being in the twilight of his career, scoring 20 goals across two-and-a-half seasons with the club.

Like many on this list, Djorkaeff – who won the World Cup with France in 1998 – had a penchant for scoring a worldie and his cult status was only added to by the fact he wore the No 6 shirt even though he was a forward.

Morten Gamst Pedersen

A #Barclaysmen who certainly had a wand of a left foot, Pedersen is up there with Blackburn’s most iconic figures in the 2000s after nine glittering years of service.

The Norwegian scored several stunning efforts over the years, with a brace during a 2-1 victory against Man United at Old Trafford a particularly happy memory for Rovers fans.

Pedersen’s occasional ‘s***housery’, which is on display during his compilation, further endeared him to Blackburn supporters, ensuring he will always remain a popular figure at Ewood Park.

Elano

Back when things weren’t as rosy at Manchester City, the introduction of a classy Brazilian playmaker, who had an eye for a screamer, felt transformative for fans.

Elano shone in the 2007-08 campaign under Sven-Goran Eriksson and was in particularly electric form at the start of his time with City.

He unfortunately faded in his second season and swiftly moved to Galatasaray, but Elano remains much-loved among City fans for his impact during an otherwise insignificant and difficult time for the club.

Geovanni

There’s nothing quite like reminiscing about Geovanni’s form for Hull City during the first half of the 2008-09 Premier League season.

After one year at Man City, the Brazilian midfielder moved to the newly promoted club and scored five goals – most of which were stunning efforts – in his first few months as Hull raced out of the blocks.

One particular strike at Arsenal lives long in the memory and although his form dipped, Geovanni is still well remembered on Humberside, evidenced by Hull’s official account compiling the #Barclaysmen clips of the Brazilian.

Sol Bamba’s battle against cancer was “never a fair fight” said his wife in a heartbreaking tribute to the former Premier League footballer, who has passed away aged 39.

The former Cardiff and Leeds centre-back was working at Adanaspor as technical director and the Turkish club announced that he died on Saturday night, leaving the world of football mourning a player described by broadcaster Jeff Stelling as “just one of the nicest men I have ever met”.

Bamba was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma in 2021 while at Cardiff, but was declared cancer-free after a course of chemotherapy and returned to play again for the Welsh club and for Middlesbrough.

“For the last few years I have watched Sol fight his cancer head on with an astounding mental and physical strength and stoicism,” wrote his wife Chloe on Instagram. “Unfortunately, it was never a fair fight and just when things were looking up he took a downturn and finally succumbed on 31 August.

“These years have been indescribably difficult but we still managed to find joy and laughter in it. I’ve experienced my worst days but also some of my best. Sol accepted his fate as God’s will and left this earth knowing, without a shadow of a doubt, that he was loved wholeheartedly. I made sure of that.
