Some New Yorkers are trying to raise awareness about water safety while remembering those who drowned this summer near city beaches.

A memorial service was held at Rockaway Beach Friday in memory of the seven New Yorkers who drowned.

That was the highest number of drowning deaths in the city in five years, according to officials.

The rise in drownings coincides with a decline in the number of city lifeguards.

An analysis by the City Council found nearly three million New Yorkers live in districts without public pools or access to water safety education.

Victim family members and elected officials are calling on the mayor’s office to take action on swim safety.

Legislation introduced in the City Council would extend beach and pool season by several weeks, and extend lifeguard hours during the summer.

The city has taken measures to increase the number of lifeguards, which have dipped since the pandemic.

Another week, another resignation. This time, the mayor’s chief counsel abruptly stepped aside. On Saturday night, Lisa Zornberg, the top lawyer at City Hall, called it quits. Is the administration in crisis? NY1 investigative reporter Courtney Gross, and political reporters Bobby Cuza and Kelly Mena weigh in on the latest round of controversy surrounding the Adams administration and why Zornberg chose to suddenly quit.

After that, two high-ranking ex-FDNY chiefs were indicted on bribery and corruption charges. Anthony Saccavino and Brian Cordasco allegedly fast-tracked fire inspections in exchange for cash. The indictment was brought by U.S. Attorney Damian Williams. The “Off Topic” team discuss the charges and what role Williams plays in the ongoing investigations into the Adams administration.

Former City Comptroller Harrison J. Goldin — who helped save the city from near-bankruptcy in the 1970s — has died.

Goldin served as the city’s top fiscal watchdog from 1974 until 1989, when he finished last in a four-way Democratic primary for mayor.

As comptroller, Goldin had a rocky relationship with Mayor Ed Koch, frequently arguing about the city’s financial direction in the 12 years that they served in office together.

A Bronx native, Goldin was also a state senator for eight years. Following his primary defeat by David Dinkins in 1989, Goldin launched a financial advisory company.

Goldin died in Manhattan on Monday at the age of 88.

With the many entertainment choices New York City has to offer, it can be difficult to make a choice. Look no further. “On Stage” host Frank DiLella has curated a list of “must-see” shows this week, directing you to the best of Broadway, Off-Broadway and beyond.

“Yellow Face”

Screen star Daniel Dae Kim returns to the stage tonight in the Broadway revival of “Yellow Face.” The revival is written by Pulitzer Prize winner David Henry Hwang and directed by Leigh Silverman. It is a rather personal play for Hwang and it shines a spotlight on the controversial cast of well-known Welsh actor Jonathan Pryce in an Asian role, during the New York premiere of “Miss Saigon” back in 1990. “Yellow Face” is in previews at the Todd Haimes Theatre. The opening is set for Oct. 1.

For tickets, visit roundabouttheatre.org.

“See What I Wanna See”

For Off-Broadway, check out the revival of Michael John LaChiusa’s “See What I Wanna See,” at Christopher Street. The show is about lust, murder and redemption. The musical is being produced by Out of the Box Theatrics and features an all-Asian American and Pacific Islander company of performers.

For tickets, visit ootbtheatrics.com.

Karen Mason

On the cabaret front, don’t miss Broadway’s Karen Mason at Birdland Jazz Clubin “Just in Styne: Karen Sings Jule” on Monday. Audiences can expect to hear tunes that were made famous by the legendary composer Jule Styne, including tunes from “Gypsy,” “Funny Girl” and more.

For reservations, go to birdlandjazz.com.

Santino Fontana

At 54 Below, Tony Award-winner Santino Fontana will take tunes by request Friday and Saturday, with some of his Broadway pals.

Lionel Cole

Lionel Cole will bring “The Beautiful Souls and Emotion” to the club on Sept. 17. The show features “music and culture that spans from South Pacific soul to New York City” front and center stage.

For more information on both shows, head to 54Below.org.

Roberto Araujo

NY1 photojournalist, Roberto Araujo, will perform on stage at The Green Room 42 on Friday, Sept. 20 in the 2024 Bistro Award winning “I Just Wanted You to Know.” This encore performance weaves together stories from Araujo’s life—from his upbringing in Mexico City to his solo move to New York City. The performance will also feature a selection of songs by Stephen Sondheim, David Yazbek, and more.
