‘Somebody cared’: Anonymous donor gives $1,000 to New Caney family homeless after derecho, Beryl, left RV unlivable

NEW CANEY, Texas – A New Caney couple that became homeless after the derecho is breathing a sigh of relief.

The couple first appeared on KPRC 2 last Friday after they said FEMA was dragging it’s feet on completing their claims.

Their RV was rendered unlivable by the derecho back in May and then Hurricane Beryl came along and only made the situation worse.

“It’s not livable, we can not go back into it. It smells bad it’s got black mold all over it, it’s nasty,” Becky Lewis said.

Becky Lewis and her husband, Derald, say they’ve been waiting for FEMA money for five months and they’ve also been left in limbo by FEMA not approving their claims. Some of the claims did get approved and some are pending.

The family had been staying in a hotel and believed FEMA would be reimbursing them for the money they spent, but so far they have not received any of the funds. They were kicked out of the hotel after being unable to pay for any more nights.

An anonymous viewer who saw our story last week has stepped in, donating $1,000 for the family.

The family is now expressing gratitude, thankful for the blessing.

“Somebody cared, yesterday I was like I don’t know what we’re going to do. This is a blessing,” Lewis said.

An inspector did come out to their RV Tuesday and the family believes FEMA will eventually come through.
