The incident took place on Chew Moor Lane in Westhoughton at 7pm last night, October 28.
Officers believe that a blue Jaguar XE, driven by a man in his 20s, was overtaking another vehicle when it hit the victim.
The driver has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
Police are looking to speak to any eyewitnesses or anyone with information about the moments leading up to the collision.
A GMP spokesperson said: “At around 6.45pm yesterday evening, Monday, we were called to reports of a road traffic collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian on Chew Moor Lane, Bolton.
“It is believed that the vehicle in question, a blue Jaguar XE was overtaking another vehicle when it appears to lose control and ends up on the pavement.
“The Jaguar collides with a pedestrian who is walking along the pavement. Despite the best efforts of the emergency services, sadly a man in his 40s died at the scene.
“The driver of the Jaguar – a man in his 20s – was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.”
They added: “Our Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) are now appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward.
“They are also keen to speak to anyone who may have any footage, including dashcam, mobile phone or doorbell footage, from the area in the moments leading up to the collision.”

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said last night: “Just before 7pm today (Monday, 28th October), firefighters were called to an incident on Hatherlow Court in Westhoughton.
“Crews remain at the scene.”
