Mason Greenwood is prepared to switch national teams to Jamaica if he is overlooked by new England manager Thomas Tuchel.

The 23-year-old left Manchester United in the summer transfer window to join Marseille in a €31.6 million (£26.6m) deal and has made an excellent start to his career in France.

Greenwood has been capped once by England but has not played for the national side since he was arrested in January 2022 for attempted rape, controlling behaviour and assault.

All charges against Greenwood were dropped in February 2023 and United had considered reintegrating him back into Erik ten Hag’s squad before he was loaned out to Spanish side Getafe last season.

Greenwood is now ready to make a return at international level and according to The Sun, the forward wants talks with Tuchel and the Football Association about whether he can play for England again.

If not, Greenwood is said to be ready to switch to Jamaica, who are managed by former United coach Steve McClaren, ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

‘Mason knows his chances of playing for England again are very slim. But he wants to check with the FA and Tuchel now he has been appointed, to see what they think,’ a source told the newspaper.

‘He is determined to play at the highest level and that means the World Cup.

‘So if England don’t want him, he’ll switch to Jamaica and try and get to the 2026 World Cup that way.’

After being unveiled Jamaica’s new manager in August, McClaren revealed that he had spoken to Greenwood about a possible switch.

‘I know the players. I met Mason and we had a little conversation,’ McClaren said.

‘I want to go and meet everyone when I get back and find out whether they actually want to come here and play for Jamaica.

‘Again, it’s the commitment. I will be making sure that we have a conversation with all the players. We have a list.’

Speaking about Greenwood’s status with the national side in September, England’s interim manager Lee Carsley said: ‘Mason wasn’t a player that we can consider, to be honest, no. I’m aware of how he’s doing, but he wasn’t under consideration.’
