Houston father faces capital murder charges for abuse that killed his twin babies

A Houston man has been charged with two counts of capital murder in connection with the deaths of his twin infants, who authorities say suffered from blunt force trauma and long-term abuse.

A Harris County grand jury has charged 21-year-old Fernando Vega with two counts of capital murder in the deaths of his twins.

BACKGROUND: Disturbing details emerge in Houston twins’ death ruled homicide, parents charged

Court documents reveal that Vega allegedly struck the infants with his hand, a blunt object, and then applied violent acceleration-deceleration forces, causing fatal injuries.

What happened?

Both Vega and his wife and mother of the twins, Angelina Belinda Calderon, were initially charged with injury to a child – serious bodily injury and are being held on $750,000 bonds. Vega’s capital murder charges were filed after further evidence emerged from the investigation.

The infants were found unresponsive in their Southeast Houston home last October. Emergency personnel arrived at the scene, but both children were pronounced dead.

According to investigators, Vega and Calderon failed to provide necessary medical care, nourishment, or proper supervision for the twins.

The Harris County Institute of Forensic Science conducted autopsies on the infants, revealing multiple signs of physical abuse, malnourishment, and trauma.

One infant had acute brain bleeding, while the other suffered hemorrhaging in both the brain and spinal cord. These injuries were consistent with blunt force trauma and possible shaking, which experts say occurred over multiple incidents.

Dr. Rico’s autopsy reports detailed bruises, fractures, and abrasions on both infants, indicating they had suffered long-term abuse. He ruled the cause of death as homicide due to blunt force injuries.
