New Socceroos coach Tony Popovic says he fully understands the “weight of responsibility” that comes with taking over the national team and has vowed to work “tirelessly” to get them to the 2026 World Cup.

Popovic’s appointment was confirmed just four days after Graham Arnold made the shock decision to quit in the wake of two poor results in World Cup qualifying.

Having won two A-League Premierships and having guided the Western Sydney Wanderers to becoming the first Australian team to win the prestigious AFC Champions League, Popovic comes highly credentialed and with a big task in front of him.

“I am extremely honoured to be given this opportunity to lead the Subway Socceroos as head coach. It’s a role that comes with great responsibility, and I’m deeply grateful for the opportunity,” Popovic said on Monday.

“This is undoubtedly a very proud moment for myself and my family. To be entrusted with guiding our national team is a privilege that I do not take lightly.

“I want to express my sincere gratitude to Football Australia for their confidence in my abilities. Their trust motivates me to give my absolute best in this role.

“I fully understand the weight of responsibility and the high expectations that come with this position. The Subway Socceroos have a rich history and a passionate fan base, and I’m committed to living up to those expectations.

“Looking ahead, I have great faith and confidence in our ability to grow as a team. Together, we will work tirelessly to improve, evolve, and continue Australia’s success on the international stage.

“I believe we have the talent and determination to make our nation proud.”

Popovic’s first task is World Cup qualifiers against China and Japan in October.

The Socceroos were goalless in a loss to Bahrain and a draw with Thailand in Arnold’s last two games in charge.
