Beware of OpenAI behind closed doors


The 2024 Physics Nobel for Geoffrey Hinton and John Hopfield is acknowledgement of AI’s potential to alter human life. But in their moment of glory, the two scientists also highlighted the risks posed by advanced tech. And Hinton in a presser later, where he thanked all his students, added, “I’m particularly proud of the fact that one of my students fired Sam Altman.”

A good deal’s been said about the crisis at OpenAI. It’s the culmination of a long story of greed and betrayal. Question is what this means for the effect of ‘AI’ on the world economy and progress of humanity.

That story is a grand one, but the apparent protagonists, Sam Altman and OpenAI, are unfortunately not worthy of its scope. A few men are stealing power and riches under the cloak of law. And the effect on humanity will be as usual.
