Authorities determined that the two men involved knew each other.

Officials are investigating a fatal shooting involving an apparent car chase in Littleton, New Hampshire on Monday.

At 11:10 p.m., a caller notified 911 that he was trying to get away from a car that was chasing and striking his own vehicle, according to a statement from the Attorney General.

Gunshots were heard a few minutes into the call.

Upon arrival at the scene, police found the cars stopped after an apparent crash near 33 Pleasant St., the statement said. The caller was waiting for the police and a second adult man, later identified as Eric Rexford, 38, of Littleton was suffering from gunshot wounds.

The caller told police the injured man, who was taken to a hospital and later died, had been the one chasing and hitting his car, police said. A medical examiner determined Rexford’s death was caused by the gunshot wounds and the manner of death was homicide, officials said.

Following the incident, authorities uncovered that the two men knew each other. Investigators are looking into whether the man who shot Rexford acted in self-defense.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting continue to be investigated, but officials say there is no indication of any threat to the general public.
