Trigger Point has finally been renewed for a third series after fans were left in suspense about its future.

The ITV drama starring Vicky McClure last aired in January, and until now, there has been no news of a possible return.

But after being streamed 30 million times and becoming the second most-watched drama on ITV1 in 2024 (behind Mr Bates vs The Post Office), it feels like a no-brainer that the broadcaster has confirmed the show’s continuation.

Many are celebrating the return of Trigger Pont, including X user Roger Genkins who excitedly typed: ‘BRILLIANT. LOVE THIS SHOW.’ Others remarked they ‘can’t wait’. Unfortunately, they may have to learn as the series hasn’t even begun filming.

However, not everybody is as enthusiastic about its return, with the TV show proving divisive.

On Rotten Tomatoes, it scored a pretty abysmal 51% audience rating, and reviews had an average score of 2.2/5. The scathing reviews called the plot ‘unbelievable’ and ‘frustrating’.

‘What this poor weak and dull drama needs is an explosion to shake up the wooden acting, plodding pace and anything resembling tension,’ wrote Andrew Arthur M.

‘So unrealistic that it had us shouting at the TV,’ fumed Glenn C.

They continued: ‘The overall story arc was quite good, but the procedures were ludicrous, Vicky McClure dealing with every single bomb herself, however many times she gets blown up, or people close to her are killed.’

Real bomb disposal expert Lucy Lewis also had issues with the way her profession has been portrayed.

While speaking to Metro, she said: ‘There were times I spat my tea everywhere and threw things at the telly and started shouting because some details were horribly wrong.’

Although viewers now have an update, there’s still a little longer to wait before they can get their eyes on new episodes. Trigger Point will return to production in 2025, with filming set to take place in London.

The programme follows a team of bomb disposal officers led by operative Lana Washington (Vicky), as they try to keep the UK capital safe from explosive devices and terrorist threats.

The next series will see Eric Shango (Danny), Nabil Elouahabi (Hassan Rahim), Natalie Simpson (DS Helen Morgan), and Maanuv Thiara (DI Amar Batra), also returning to their roles, and contending with a new issue.

Series two ended with Lana admitting she ‘wasn’t okay’ after surviving a terrorist kidnap, but she must quickly get back to work.

In the new episodes, the team will be called to investigate a bomb threat, but the case becomes more complex as it is revealed to be the start of a sinister vendetta. Someone is out for revenge, and targeting individuals to get it. Working alongside the Police Counterterrorism Unit, the Bomb Disposal Squad will race against time to find the bomber before they claim their next victim.

Executive producer Jed Mercurio, who was also behind Breathtaking and Line of Duty, thanked fans for allowing it to become a success. He told viewers to prepare themselves for ‘twists, turns, bangs and blasts’ as they make it a hat-trick.

An equally excited Vicky, 41, is thrilled to become Lana again, calling it a joyous experience.

‘Having had such a positive response to the previous two series, we want to make the next series even more exciting, keep everyone on the edge of their seats whilst getting to know even more about the brilliant characters in the show,’ she shared.

Speaking about playing her character, Vicky said: ‘Lana is such a complex character to play, it’s a joy for an actor to play a role with as many layers.’

Trigger Point series one and two are available to watch on ITVX.
