Live: Essendon’s contract ploy to unlock Jake Stringer’s trade, as Tigers cop heat over monster extension

The questions surrounding Noah Balta’s extension

what are the questions around Balta’s contract? One of the best KPDs in the league and still only 24

– T-BONE

Hi T-Bone,

The questions are coming from Kane Cornes, who is a vocal hater of long-term extensions.

“This is getting out of hand and out of control. Why do clubs keep doing this?” he asked this morning on Trade Radio.

Here were his reasons for being concerned.

However, the conversation around long-term deals is a little bit more nuanced than Cornes would like to believe.

Brisbane football boss Danny Daly explained it well this morning.

“You have to be a bit careful about holding your ground on 4-5 year deals, because other teams will come with 6-7 years, so you need to be prepared to match that to keep your good players,” he told Trade Radio.

Essendon great Matthew Lloyd also explained the control aspect it gives teams like Richmond, whose cap isn’t exactly bursting at the seams.

“Rather than Noah Balta coming out of contract, you’ve got him,” he told 3AW.

“I know it’s a long time, but you can manage their money across all those years.

“If ever Balta wanted to leave, you then control the market and you can ask for a fair bit (in a trade). You have the whip hand.”

Hopes still alive for a Clayton Oliver trade

It appears Clayton Oliver‘s desired move to get to Geelong may not be dead in the water just yet.

Melbourne has come out strongly in saying he will not be traded, but AFL.com.au’s Damian Barrett isn’t buying it.

“He still desperately wants out. And the Cats will try something before Wednesday night’s trade deadline,” Barrett wrote in his Sliding Doors column this morning.

“Whatever the outcome, this club cannot continue with Gary Pert as CEO.”

According to The Age, Oliver is prepared to take a pay cut if it helps getting a deal with Geelong over the line.

Oliver is believed to be earning on average of $1.3 million per season on his deal which runs through 2030.

How Brisbane plans to replace Joe Daniher

Brisbane football boss Danny Daly has spoken on Trade Radio about how the club plans to replace Joe Daniher.

“We will look at all options, we may go down the 2 key forwards path, we will get Linc McCarthy back next year too, so we have options to go small as well,” he said.

Daly says the Lions are not in the hunt for Tim Membrey.

Brisbane Lions youngster requests trade to Melbourne

Brisbane’s Harry Sharp has requested a trade to join Melbourne, according to AFL.com.au’s Riley Beveridge.

Sharp was taken 43rd overall in the 2020 draft, but has played just 16 games for the Lions, including six this season.

He is contracted through 2025 with Brisbane.

Essendon prepared to pay some of Jake Stringer’s GWS contract

At the moment, Jake Stringer‘s move to GWS looks like the closest one to actually happening.

Essendon list boss Matt Rosa spoke yesterday and said the club is after “adequate compensation” for Stringer, who kicked 42 goals this year.

It has been floated that the Giants would likely offer a draft pick in the 50s in return for the 30-year-old forward.

According to The Age, the Bombers are prepared to pay some of Stringer’s deal next season with the Giants, if it means they are compensated with a better draft pick.

GWS currently has picks 15, 16, 21, 37, 53 and 56. If they’re prepared to offer 37 to the Bombers, that might unlock the deal you’d think.

Welcome!

Good morning everyone, and welcome to ABC Sport’s live coverage from day five of the AFL trade period.

Look, to say this trade period has been a slow burn would be a gross understatement.

Is today the day we get some player movement? There’s only one way to find out.

Your questions have been brilliant this week, please keep them coming and I’ll try and answer them as best as I can.

If you missed the ‘action’ yesterday, a lot of it was centered around Jake Stringer’s potential move to the Giants.
