HOUSTON – All eyes remain on Florida and Texas is maintaining its commitment to step in and assist our neighbors as the monstrous Hurricane Milton brought a deadly storm surge and strong winds to the area.

Organizations and volunteers all across the city will be stepping in to help. In fact, volunteers with the Salvation Army said they will be headed to Sarasota later this week to provide hot meals for residents in need.

“You’re going to experience people who have likely just lost everything, if not close to everything,” Chantel Mills with Salvation Army – Westfield said. “And in those moments, literally, your basic needs are so much more important. And so being able to provide a meal, being able to provide bottles of water or just a smile and encouragement of some sort, like those things have like even more impact in situations like these.”

Texas Governor Greg Abbott also is sending military aircraft from the National Guard to help with search and rescue efforts, as well as deploying 180 state troopers (some from Houston) to support these flood rescues.

CenterPoint Energy is also sending more than 300 workers to staging areas to help restore power (once it is safe) to the millions of residents experiencing outages.

Firefighters from Houston, Montgomery County, Sugar Land, and Humble are also being sent out to help. HFD in fact sent out crews Wednesday morning.
