The crash comes less than a week after the Worcester City Council voted to reduce the citywide speed limit to 25 miles per hour.

Police said the driver was heading down South Ludlow Street when the car hit two pedestrians on Tuesday night.

One woman died in a car crash in Worcester on Tuesday, police said.

The “serious pedestrian crash” left one other victim in the hospital, the Worcester Police Department said in a statement. 

Police arrived at the intersection of Clover and South Ludlow Streets at 9:56 p.m. on Tuesday, the statement said. Officers said they found two victims at the scene and transported both to the hospital. The victim who died was 35, police said. The other, also female “suffered less serious injuries,” the department said.

Worcester police said a preliminary investigation shows a driver was traveling down South Ludlow Street when two pedestrians crossed the street. The vehicle hit both pedestrians, then hit another car, police said. An investigation into the crash is ongoing. 

After more than 90 pedestrian-involved crashes in 2024, the Worcester City Council voted to reduce the speed limit to 25 miles per hour citywide on Sept. 10. Worcester officials also declared a “Road Safety and Traffic Violence Crisis” in July following a crash that killed a 13-year-old girl.
