Blues sound out ex-Pies mastermind in potential CEO succession plan

Carlton has approached former Collingwood premiership guru Graham Wright regarding a potential chief executive succession plan with Brian Cook.

According to a report by the Age, Blues president Luke Sayers discussed the proposal with Wright — to work under Cook in a senior role next season before Wright would assume CEO duties later in 2025.

Cook has agreed to stay on as Blues CEO for another season before he’s expected to step down, with the club reportedly eager to conduct an in-depth process for his replacement.

The report states Wright was only sounded out about the idea, not formally offered the role.

Wright, 56, is also being courted by the AFL to work in its football operations as well as Adelaide about a senior football position.

It comes with Sayers expected to depart as president at the end of 2025, when his extended term expires.

Wright left his position as Magpies football boss following their 2023 flag triumph for a sabbatical to travel with his family to the United States and Europe. He then opted not to return to his role amid claims of a falling out with Pies CEO Craig Kelly.

A report earlier this year stated Wright wanted new opportunities and has interest in becoming a chief executive after a 35-year run in football including serving as Alastair Clarkson’s right-hand man during Hawthorn’s golden era in the 2010s.

Wright was reportedly keen on the CEO role at the 19th AFL club before the Tasmania Devils hired ex-Richmond boss Brendon Gale.

Returning to Collingwood in 2021, Wright, a 1990 premiership Magpie, played a key role in the club’s renaissance amid a host of changes including installing Craig McRae as coach and overseeing its list build, recruiting premiership players Bobby Hill, Tom Mitchell, Patrick Lipinski and Billy Frampton.
